We've set up several virtual networking channels to help you all keep in touch during and after the Hypertext 2008 conference. So, even if you can't make it to Hypertext, you can still join in the conversation and not be left out!

Completing our plans to practice what we preach and to engage various social networking and linking sites, we now made several new arrangements. Tinderbox day at Hypertext 2008

Call for Participation
======================

In 2007, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ACM Conference on
Hypertext and Hypermedia series which is the acknowledged venue for
high quality peer-reviewed research on linking. The web, the
semantic web and Web 2.0 are all manifestations of the success of
the link. The Hypertext Conference provides the forum for research
that considers links, their semantics, their presentation, the
applications they have been put to, the knowledge that can be derived
from their analysis and their effect on society. If information is
connected, then the connection is called a link: the Hypertext
Conference is concerned with all research concerning links.

The conference will take place June 19-21, 2008, in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, directly after ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital
Libraries (see http://www.jcdl2008.org/). Both conferences are being
hosted by the School of Information Sciences at the University of
Pittsburgh. Following our theme of "linking people and places," it
is of interest to note that in 1998, the ACM Hypertext and Digital
Libraries conferences were co-located in Pittsburgh, PA. Soon after
1998, the ACM Digital Libraries Conference evolved into the Joint
Conference on Digital Libraries. In 2008, Hypertext conference
celebrating links is again linked to JCDL in Pittsburgh, ten years
later.

IMPORTANT: May 19th is the last day to register with the early bird
discounted registration fee both JDCL 2008 and Hypertext 2008. A
discount of $100 ($50 for students) if also available for those
registering for both conferences.

The Venue and Accommodation
===========================

Hypertext 2008 and JCDL 2008 will be held at the Omni William Penn
Hotel, a historic luxury hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. Conference
sessions, workshops and tutorials will take place at the hotel.
IMPORTANT: To ensure that you'll receive the discount conference rate
of $156.00 (US), you will have to place your reservations before May
25, 2008 May 25th for both JCDL and Hypertext conferences.

Students attending HT'08 have the option of staying in a student
dormitory on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Hypertext 2008 will present two Keynote Speakers: Bernardo A.
Huberman, a Senior HP Fellow and director of the Social Computing Lab
and Jon Kleinberg, a Professor in the Department of Computer Science

* Creating out of the Machine: Hypertext, Hypermedia, and Web Artists

Social and Cultural Program
---------------------------

Hypertext 2008 will feature ACM SIGWEB "Shake-Hands" reception for
delegates of both JDCL and Hypertext conferences and a social dinner
at the award-winning LeMont Restaurant
(http://www.lemontpittsburgh.com/) overlooking Pittsburgh Golden
Triangle.

The Conference week falls within Pittsburgh major downtown arts
festival (http://www.artsfestival.net/) with many performances and
exhibitions all over downtown. While it makes your visit to
Pittsburgh more interesting, it will be also increasingly harder to
reserve downtown hotels (and the rates may go up as well). Please, do
not delay!

In addition, two cultural events are organized for the conference delegates:
* A visit to Pittsburgh Symphony featuring the performance of the

store owner Edgar Kaufmann Sr. as a mountain retreat. This building
was voted the most important building of the 20th century in a poll
conducted by the American Institute of Architects.

Early registration deadline for JCDL and Hypertext 2008 - May 19

A message from the conference chairs:

For both JDCL 2008 and Hypertext 2008, May 19th is the last day to register with the early bird discounted registration fee. I remind that you can save $100 ($50 as a student) if registering for both conferences. This is also an important deadline for those with accepted submissions. Since the conference and workshop proceedings will be moved to production shortly after May 19th, we need at least one author of each accepted submission (presumably the presenter) to register before this deadline.

Another important deadline is May 25th. For both JCDL and Hypertext conferences it is the last day to reserve the conference hotel with a discounted conference rate. However, please, do not wait until 25th. The block of rooms reserved for Hypertext 2008 is very small and it was already exhausted a few days ago. We worked with the hotel to ensure that a few extra rooms are added and it looks like at least today you still can reserve your room in Omni. If you was trying to do it a few days ago and failed, please, do it again without a delay. Please, consider also sharing the rooms to maximize the value of the reserved block. Omni, the historic William Penn hotel, is one of the best in Pittsburgh and has spacious rooms.

Jon Kleinberg is second invited speaker at HT08

It is great news to hear that Hypertext 2008 has announced that Prof. Jon Kleinberg from Cornell University will be the second invited speaker. Those in the hypertext community will know Jon from his seminal work on the HITS algorithm of finding hubs and authorities for searching. He's also done work with social networking and has created search algorithms and trying to identify communities on the web (of which my PhD work is related to as well).

Jon Kleinberg is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at
Cornell University. His research interests are centered around issues
at the interface of networks and information; in his recent work, he has
focused on the social processes that underpin large, decentralized
information systems.

Kleinberg is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of MacArthur,
Packard, and Sloan Foundation Fellowships, the Nevanlinna Prize from
the International Mathematical Union, and the National Academy of
Sciences Award for Initiatives in Research.

Hotel reservation for Hypertext 2008

The hotel reservation site for Hypertext 2008 is now open: http://www.sigweb.org/ht08/accomodations.html

We reserved a very small block of rooms at the Hypertext 2008 conference hotel, Omni William Penn. Please, book your room early if you want to stay there. Note also that some other large event will be happening in Pittsburgh right after hypertext 2008 and, with hundreds of people arriving in advance, other downtown hotels may not be easily available.

We also ask you to consider room sharing. Not only $78 is a better deal than $156, but it will allow us to host more delegates at the main conference hotel.

If you are a student, you may want to consider a student dorm accommodation. Dorms are located in Oakland, the most attractive area of the city, the home to Carnegie Mellon, University of Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museums, etc. It is just 15-20 min bus ride to downtown with buses running every 5-10 min depending on the time of the day. The information is also provided on the accommodation page.

Student Research Competition at Hypertext 2008

Hypertext 2008 will be participating in the ACM Student Research Competition sponsored by Microsoft Research. The SRC, which is held at select ACM conferences, will provide an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students attending Hypertext 2008 to receive a $500 travel grant from Microsoft Research to present their research at Hypertext 2008. All invited students will compete in a conference competition for the best presentations, with the winners eligible for a spot in the SRC Grand Finals. The SRC is a valuable opportunity for students to participate in Hypertext 2008 and to receive recognition from ACM for the quality of their research.

The Hypertext 2008 SRC consists of two rounds: a poster session and a presentation session. A panel of judges will select a number of finalists from the poster session, who will be invited to the presentation session. Winners are selected from the presentation session. The top three graduate and undergraduate winners will receive cash awards.

The Hypertext 2008 SRC winners will be invited to participate in the SRC Grand Finals, an online round of competitions among the winners of individual conference-hosted SRCs. The winners of the Grand Finals are invited to the ACM awards banquet together with their advisors, for an all-expenses-paid trip.

Submission Details
------------------
Students who wish to participate must submit the following information:

An abstract of up to 800 words explaining the content of the poster.
Presenter's email address, phone number and surface mail address.
Indicate whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student.
Name of department and school.
Name of academic advisor.
The abstract must describe the student's individual research and must be first-authored by the student. If the work is collaborative with others and/or part of a larger group project, the abstract should make clear what the student's role was and should focus on that portion of the work.

If you are a student and have already submitted a poster as part of the regular poster session, please send an additional note stating that you wish to be considered for the SRC, as well, by the April 30 deadline. Unfortunately, submissions of short or full technical papers are not eligible for consideration of the SRC.

one minute ³poster pitch² followed by poster sessions within the

Call for Papers: Hypertext 2008

Welcome to the Hypertext 2008 blog, the blog for Hypertext 2008! The annual Hypertext 2008 conference is coming up this year, it is earlier than last year. This year it is in June, specifically June 19 to 21 in Pittsburgh, USA, whereas last year it was in early September. Full papers and short papers are due February 11. This year there are four tracks: Information Linking and Organization, Social Linking, Applications of Hypertext, and Hypertext, Culture and Communication.

I'm also the unofficial student representative for SIGWEB, so I'm writing this blog entry to encourage all students that have their research related to hypertext and the web to submit to Hypertext. You can check out last year's Hypertext page for more details on what happened at Hypertext last year.
